Kate Vixon Wofford papers, 1933-1954.

Chiefly correspondence re Wofford's teaching career at State Teachers College of New York at Buffalo and the University of Florida and newspaper clippings re her death and her distinction of being the first woman elected to office in South Carolina. Correspondence, from Harry W. Rockwell, president, State Teachers College of New York at Buffalo, includes letters, 1933, offering her the position of Director of the Rural Education Department; 16 May 1934, complimenting Wofford's recent address and her "missionary work" on behalf of education in rural sections; 25 July 1934, expressing pleasure at the result of Rural Education Days; and 21 Dec. 1939, re his admiration for her report on her instruction at the summer session at Teachers College and noting her "increasing respect for colored teachers." Other correspondence includes copy of 2 letters, 1 Mar. 1935, to President L.T. Baker and Dean Irene D. Elliott, University of South Carolina, explaining that she could not leave her chosen field of rural education to accept a position as dean; letter, 20 July 1938, Harry W. Rockwell to Dr. Mabel Carney, Teachers College, Columbia University, re her commendation of Wofford's book, Modern Education for the Small Rural School. Other papers include correspondence, 1947, with Dean G. Ballard Simmons, University of Florida, re a professorship of elementary education which she accepted; during her tenure in Florida, Wofford advised the Turkish government on organization of an elementary system of education; and 2 undated newspaper clippings re Wofford's background and career in education and her distinction of being the first woman elected to office in South Carolina, 1922.
